چکیده

Numerical fracture toughness assessment of two types of steel, AISI 420 and AISI 431, has been conducted in this paper. The J-integral is chosen as a criterion for fracture behaviour comparison of compact type (CT) specimens made of investigated materials. The values of J-integral are determined through a newly developed algorithm using finite element (FE) stress analysis results of numerically simulated single specimen test method, which is usually employed for experimental J-integral assessment. Jintegral values are presented in dependence on specimen crack growth size (Δa) for three initial measures of specimen's crack size, a/W = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75.

Study of Variation of the J-integral and the Fracture Toughness in Blunt V-notches under Mode I Loading

Fracture assessment of U- and V-notches is important in mechanical engineering. One can use the J-integral as fracture parameter in order to predict the critical fracture load in notches. The critical value of the J-integral in cracks is a function of the material properties. In notches, however, the material properties as well as the notch dimensions affect this critical value (named fracture ...

Experimental Assessment of Toughness in Ceramic Matrix Composites using the J-integral with Digital Image Correlation Part I: Methodology and Validation

The complex nature of damage in ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) renders conventional methods of measuring quantitative fracture properties impractical. This paper is the first of twopart series that assesses the feasibility of using the J-integral with full-field deformation data from Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to characterize toughness in continuous fiber SiC/SiC CMC laminates. It provid...

Prediction of the Crack Kinking in a Sandwich Composite Beam Subjected to Three Point Bending Using the J Integral Concept

Composite materials utilizing the sandwich structure are a basic family of materials and possess a highly increasing use in modern industrial applications. Since the traditional approach to structural design and material selection tends to be replaced by the Fracture mechanics approach, it is worth understanding the way that the Fracture mechanics approach is applied. The traditional approach t...

Microscopic assessment of bone toughness using scratch tests

Bone is a composite material with five distinct structural levels: collagen molecules, mineralized collagen fibrils, lamellae, osteon and whole bone. However, most fracture testing methods have been limited to the macroscopic scale and there is a need for advanced characterization methods to assess toughness at the osteon level and below. The goal of this investigation is to present a novel fra...

Fracture toughness design in horse hoof keratin.

An engineering fracture mechanics approach was applied to the analysis of the fracture resistance of equine hoof-wall. The relationship between fracture toughness and the morphological organization of the keratin hoof tissue was investigated. Fracture toughness was evaluated using the J-integral analysis method which employs the compact tension test geometry. Tensile tests were also conducted t...
